Mark Your Calendars: Total Solar Eclipse to Grace the Skies over the US in 2023

In just a few short years, the United States will be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime event. On April 8, 2023, a total solar eclipse will grace the skies over the US, giving millions of people the opportunity to witness one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and the Earth, casting a shadow on the Earth’s surface and blocking out the sun’s light. The moon’s shadow will move across the United States from west to east, starting in Oregon and ending in Georgia.

The last time a total solar eclipse was visible in the continental US was in 2017, and the next one won’t occur until 2045. So, this 2023 event is not to be missed.

The path of totality, which is the area where the sun will be completely blocked out by the moon, will be approximately 70 miles wide and will pass through 14 states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

If you live within driving distance of the path of totality, it’s definitely worth planning a trip to witness the eclipse. However, even if you’re not in the path of totality, you’ll still be able to see a partial eclipse, which is also an incredible experience.

It’s important to note that looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage. So, make sure to wear certified eclipse glasses or use a solar filter on your camera or telescope.

The 2023 total solar eclipse is sure to be a highlight of the year, and a memory that will last a lifetime. So, mark your calendars and start planning your viewing location now. This is a rare opportunity that you won’t want to miss!
