Early Life and Career

Pant grew up in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, where his father Rajendra Pant was a small business owner. He started playing cricket at a young age and quickly developed a passion for the game. In 2013, he moved to Delhi to pursue his cricketing dreams and joined the Sonnet Cricket Academy.

Pant made his debut for the Delhi cricket team in the 2015-16 season of the Ranji Trophy. He quickly made an impact, scoring a century in his third match and finishing the season with 799 runs at an average of 79.90. His performances caught the eye of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), who signed him up for the 2016 season.

IPL Career

Pant made his IPL debut for the Delhi Daredevils in 2016, where he played under the captaincy of Indian legend Zaheer Khan. He showed his potential in his very first game, scoring an impressive 69 off 40 balls against the Gujarat Lions. He finished the season with 198 runs at a strike rate of 130.26.

Pant’s breakout season in the IPL came in 2018 when he scored 684 runs in 14 matches at an average of 52.61 and a strike rate of 173.60. He was instrumental in guiding Delhi to the playoffs, scoring a blistering 128 not out off just 63 balls against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Pant continued his impressive form in the 2019 IPL, scoring 488 runs at an average of 37.53 and a strike rate of 162.66. He was particularly devastating against Mumbai Indians, scoring 78 off just 27 balls in a high-scoring encounter.

International Career

Pant made his international debut for India in a T20 match against England in 2017. He made an immediate impact, scoring a quickfire 26 off 16 balls and taking a catch behind the stumps. He made his Test debut against England later that year and scored his maiden Test century against England in 2018.

Pant’s most memorable performance in international cricket came in the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. In the fourth Test in Sydney, he scored an unbeaten 159 off just 189 balls, becoming the first Indian wicket-keeper to score a century in Australia. He followed that up with a quickfire 33 off 28 balls in the second innings as India won the Test by 137 runs.

Pant’s performances in the Test series against Australia earned him widespread praise, with many commentators and former players hailing him as the next big thing in Indian cricket. He continued to make an impact in the following Test series against West Indies, scoring his second Test century and becoming the first Indian wicket-keeper to score a century in both England and Australia.

Pant’s form in international cricket has been somewhat inconsistent, with flashes of brilliance interspersed with periods of poor form. However, his potential as a match-winner has never been in doubt, and he remains a key player for India in all three formats of the game.
